Ardour mono phase: monitor fold, polarity, Linux VST3/LV2/CLAP vs spectral phase repair
Ardour on Linux (and Win/Mac) can hide cancel until you fold the monitor or master. Polarity invert, small delay align, and honest stereo width come first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct Linux-friendly DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, monitor mono, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights. On Ardour Linux, load VST3 or CLAP (AU is macOS-only).
What Ardour mono-phase failure sounds like
- Stereo buses look huge in headphones, then monitor mono eats Mid body. Kick, bass, or vocal chest vanish on fold.
- Dual DI+mic or dual-cab tracks never polarity-checked. Two paths fight until one invert restores body.
- Plugin stereo width / Haas delays on inserts. Wide in cans; thin on phone or livestream export.
- VCA / Group / bus nesting hides Side-only energy until you fold the master or monitor section.
- Fine in Ardour headphones, broken on export or stream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Ardour mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Engage a mono fold on the Monitor or Master (monitor mono, or a dedicated mono Utility/fold plugin on the audition path). Toggle it; do not leave it on forever.
- A/B critical Groups, buses, and Returns with mono engaged. Note what disappears: kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, stereo reverb bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass, vocal vs stereo return, DI vs mic.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on Master, then with mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Ardour (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity on one path
On one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel bus, flip polarity when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small delay align (not Haas width)
Use track delay or a simple delay plugin in milliseconds/samples to align secondary paths to the hero. Do not use short L/R Haas delays as "width" before a mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Stereo width honesty
Width tools collapse Side energy when you fold. That is a fold tool or image tool, not a repair. If mono kills the part, fix polarity and routing first. Do not "rescue" with more wideners.
4. Linux plugin scan hygiene (VST3 / LV2 / CLAP)
Confirm PHIXER (or any stereo repair) is scanned as VST3 or CLAP on Linux. LV2 peers are fine for meters and mono fold. AU does not apply on Linux. Re-scan after install; place on the stereo bed that must stay stereo.
5. Monitor / master fold vs spectral repair
Monitor mono and master fold are checks, not frequency-aware repair. PHIXER is for residual band-by-band L/R fights on material that must stay stereo after polarity, delay, and width honesty.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo clip or bus must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after those steps, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with master/monitor mono A/B, plugin bypassed vs engaged.
Ardour path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo bus / Group | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Monitor mono; center lows; polarity |
| DI + mic dual path | Body vanishes on fold | Polarity on one path; small delay |
| Width / Haas insert | Wide in headphones, hollow Mid | Bypass widener; prove bed |
| Parallel send / return | Dry + wet cancel body | Polarity; align; quieter send |
| Export / livestream fold | Fine in Ardour, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / fold habit |
Ardour checklist (to export or stream)
1. Keep a monitor or master mono toggle
Make fold muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust Ardour headphones alone.
2. Audit dual paths with mono engaged
Flip polarity and solo each dual path under monitor mono. Note which path eats Mid.
3. Bypass wideners during the check
Prove the bed without stereo width devices. If mono is fine without them and broken with them, the widener is the problem.
4. Re-check after freeze / bounce / session rebuild
New latency and routing change polarity relationships. Flip polarity again after freeze or consolidate.
When PHIXER helps in Ardour
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo sample, stereo bus print, stereo return bed).
- Polarity, delay align, width honesty, and monitor fold hygiene are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B master/monitor mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace polarity, delay align, or to "fix" Haas / stereo width tricks.
- On Linux you loaded the VST3 or CLAP build (not expecting AU).
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when monitor mono engages | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| DI + mic fight | Polarity; small delay align | Dual-path arrival fight |
| Widener huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass widener; center lows | Width ≠ phase repair |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / sample choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not monitor/master-mono auditioned yet.
- The fix is obviously polarity, delay, quieter Sends, or bypassing a widener.
- You want PHIXER to make the project wider or "more Ardour." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Monitor/master mono → polarity on dual paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest stereo width → Linux VST3/CLAP scan proof → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before export or stream.
